As the Christmas season approaches, the iconic White Cat statue in Kuching has once again undergone a festive transformation, contributing to the city’s lively holiday spirit.

The Kuching South City Council (MBKS) has adorned this cherished landmark with vibrant Christmas decorations, including a tree and Santa outfits.

Lighting Ceremony

A special ceremony to illuminate the statue took place on Friday night, officiated by Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian, Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, Deputy Mayor Dato Zaiedi Suhaili, and several councillors.

During the event, Dr Sim emphasized the importance of decorating the cat statue for various festivals, referring to it as a symbol of unity.

“We are at the symbol of Kuching, which is the white cat statues. On every occasion, we come together to celebrate by changing costumes,” he stated.

Unity and Celebration

Dr Sim also urged the public to cherish and maintain this unity, warning that it could easily be disrupted if not cared for.

He reflected on the broader significance of peace and joy during the festive season, highlighting that many regions around the world are currently experiencing conflict and suffering.

“In this season of travelling and spending time with family and friends, we should reflect, share joy, and consider our role in Sarawak’s nation-building,” he expressed.

Symbolism of Light

Mayor Wee emphasized the symbolic nature of the statue’s lights as a guiding light against darkness.

“When we talk about lighting, we are talking about lights against darkness. Christmas is a time for joy, peace, and harmony,” he remarked.

“Let’s continue that spirit in Sarawak, protect our harmony, and be proud Sarawakians,” he concluded.
