The recent lighting of “A Christmas In Borneo” at the iconic Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang Phase 1 has ushered in a delightful festive spirit and a compelling message of unity to the heart of Sibu.
Chairman of the Sibu Municipal Council (SMC), Clarence Ting, took a moment to reminisce about last year’s Christmas celebration, themed “Disneyland”, which had filled many with joy and wonder.
Return to Roots
“And now, one year later, we find ourselves back home, right here in beautiful Borneo. There is something truly meaningful about returning home — to our cultures, our traditions, and our unique identity. That is the heart of ‘A Christmas In Borneo’,” Ting conveyed in a speech delivered by Councillor Michelle Law during the event.
He emphasized that this celebration aligns with the mission of the Social and Community Development Committee: to bring people together, enhance community spirit, and foster inclusive celebrations that promote the wellbeing of all residents.

“Through shared joy and festive cheer, we make Sibu vibrant and connected. Our town is special because of its rich cultural heritage, life along the Rejang River, hardworking spirit, and most importantly – the warmth, friendliness, and sincerity of our people,” he added.
Spirit of Unity
Event organizing chairman, Councillor Simon Wee, remarked that the celebration transcends merely turning on lights; it symbolizes “switching on the spirit of unity, joy, and community which Borneo is renowned for.”
“Though we do not experience the winter snow, we possess something even more magical. We have a community that stands together, celebrates together, and laughs together,” he expressed.
