Malaysia’s transport bodies are evaluating a new dedicated cross-border bus connection between Miri in Sarawak and Brunei International Airport. This initiative aims to offer travellers from northern Sarawak a smooth, budget-friendly way to access Brunei’s flight network, while also deepening trade and tourism links with the Sultanate.

According to Transport Minister Anthony Loke, the Land Public Transport Agency (APAD) has been instructed to carry out a feasibility assessment examining passenger volumes, best routes and timetables, fare policies, and the streamlining of customs and immigration processes. “We want Miri residents and those from nearby districts to travel to Brunei International Airport comfortably, without multiple transfers,” he stated yesterday.

Key considerations include:
• Frequency and timing: Early plans propose two to three daily round trips aligned with Brunei International Airport’s busiest departure and arrival times.
• Pick-up and drop-off locations: In addition to a main terminal in Miri, potential stops in Tudan, Senadin and Piasau are under review to broaden coverage.
• Ticketing and fares: Digital booking and e-tickets will be available. Pricing will be set competitively against existing private shuttles.
• Cross-border formalities: Joint teams of Malaysian and Bruneian immigration and customs officers are expected to harmonise passport and baggage checks to reduce waiting times.

State Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali praised the proposal, highlighting that enhanced access to Brunei’s international air links could increase visitor numbers to Sarawak. “This service would benefit business travellers, students and tourists seeking seamless travel packages spanning both sides of the border,” she commented.

The APAD report is slated for completion in the coming months. If findings are favourable and bilateral agreements secured, the bus service could launch by late 2024, providing an alternative to private vehicles and taxis for passengers connecting through Brunei’s airport.
