Yayasan Sarawak International School Miri Starts Operations in Bekenu–Beraya as Government Announces Additional Campus Developments

KUCHING: The brand-new Yayasan Sarawak International School (YSIS) Miri has opened its doors in the Bekenu–Beraya area, representing the inaugural project in a series aimed at expanding quality education opportunities throughout Sarawak.

Situated on a five-hectare plot in the Bekenu district, YSIS Miri serves learners from early childhood through secondary school, blending local and global curricula. The campus boasts contemporary classrooms, science and computer labs, a library, sports facilities, plus specialized art and music studios. Designed for up to 600 pupils, the school welcomed over 200 students in its first term.

Datuk Seri Dr. Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Sarawak’s Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, who officiated the launch last Friday, underscored the state government’s dedication to improving education in urban and rural communities alike. “By funding institutions like YSIS Miri, we guarantee that coastal populations have access to top-tier learning facilities,” he stated.

The inauguration of YSIS Miri aligns with the Sarawak Development Corridor Education Blueprint, which targets the opening of no fewer than four additional state-backed international schools within the next three years. Proposed sites include Song, Sebauh, Bario and Long Lama, each selected to support growing populations beyond Kuching and Miri centers.

Beyond academics, YSIS Miri will offer extracurricular activities ranging from environmental conservation initiatives to robotics clubs. Parents and regional leaders have lauded the new school, noting its potential to cut travel times to distant urban campuses and generate local employment for teachers and support personnel.

Enrollment for the 2024/2025 school year is now open. Comprehensive information on admission requirements, tuition rates, and scholarship opportunities for outstanding students is available on the Yayasan Sarawak International Schools website. The state education ministry urges families to submit applications early, as demand is expected to be high.
