MIRI (April 2): Five men – including two individuals employed at the targeted workshop – have been taken into custody over the burglary of electrical cables valued at roughly RM7,000 from an industrial lot in this area.
According to Miri police chief ACP Hakemal Hawari, police were alerted on March 30 when workshop personnel noticed that several long coils of copper cable were absent. Surveillance footage captured the suspects cutting through the perimeter fence and fleeing with the cables during daylight hours.
Relying on the CCTV images, officers executed synchronized operations at multiple sites across town on April 1, apprehending all five suspects, aged between 24 and 37. Authorities also seized assorted lengths of stripped cabling, wire-cutting implements, and a motorcycle thought to have served as their escape transport.
Initial interrogations indicated that two suspects were workshop staff with knowledge of the facility’s security schedule. All five will face charges under Section 379 of the Penal Code for theft and will be remanded by the Miri Magistrate’s Court as investigations continue.
