University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) has moved a significant stride toward establishing Sarawak’s inaugural indigenous medical faculty, announced chairman Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Abang Salleh yesterday. He noted that UTS has officially forwarded its proposal to the Education Ministry and is pending the ministry’s go-ahead. If approved, the faculty is set to welcome its inaugural class in mid-2025.

Datuk Seri Abdul Karim revealed this during an industry-academia expo held on campus, where global collaborators and government bodies presented advanced healthcare innovations, joint research endeavours and training initiatives. He stressed that establishing a medical school in Sarawak will tackle the persistent doctor deficit across urban, suburban and rural areas of the state.

To maintain high standards and relevance, UTS has secured academic collaborations with renowned institutions in Australia, the United Kingdom and Japan. According to him, these partnerships will aid in designing the curriculum, arranging clinical placements and facilitating faculty exchanges. The objective is to merge international best practices with Sarawak’s specific health needs—especially those of indigenous and remote populations.

He added that the faculty will start with 100 seats, with intentions to increase enrolment as facilities and staff expand. A custom-designed medical complex—featuring simulation laboratories, research hubs and community clinics—is currently being built adjacent to the main campus in Sibu. The Sarawak state government has shown robust support for this project, seeing it as crucial to enhancing public healthcare and keeping medical professionals in the region.

Abdul Karim concluded that cultivating a homegrown medical workforce will not only strengthen the state’s hospitals and clinics but also stimulate research on tropical illnesses, rural healthcare delivery and traditional healing methods. “Our commitment is to establish a medical faculty that equips caring, skilled doctors prepared to serve Sarawak and beyond,” he stated.
