Sarawak authorities have seized smuggled liquor valued at over RM26 million during coordinated raids last week. This multi-agency operation, spearheaded by the Royal Malaysian Customs Department and aided by maritime, police and immigration units, targeted multiple storage facilities and distribution hubs around Kuching and Samarahan.
Over a four-day period, teams raided twelve locations and discovered about 150,000 litres of assorted spirits—whisky, vodka and rum—suspected to have been smuggled in from Indonesian Borneo. According to Customs spokesperson Mohd Rizal Abdullah, the street value of the confiscated alcohol totaled RM26.4 million, marking one of Sarawak’s largest illicit alcohol seizures to date.
“Our intelligence revealed that syndicates were using land and river passages to bring in sizable shipments,” Mohd Rizal explained. “We conducted focused surveillance and then simultaneously struck at several sites to prevent relocation of the contraband.”
The operation led to the arrest of nine individuals—both Malaysian citizens and foreign nationals—aged 24 to 52, who are now under investigation under the Customs Act 1967. Upon conviction, they could be fined up to five times the value of the seized items, jailed for up to five years, or both.
Datuk Iskandar Ahmad, Sarawak Customs director, commended the collaborative effort. “This achievement highlights our dedication to dismantle organised smuggling rings and safeguard compliant businesses that follow excise and import laws,” he commented. “We will maintain close collaboration with our enforcement partners to curb the inflow of contraband into the state.”
The confiscated alcohol has been transferred to a secure government facility and will stay there until the legal process is complete. Officials caution that additional raids targeting illicit excisable goods are scheduled throughout the year.
