A two-level timber residence on Jalan Borneo Lama in Kuching was razed by flames late Monday night, resulting in approximately RM250,000 in damages to the proprietor.
Petra Jaya firefighters were alerted at 8.15 pm and reached the site within four minutes, only to find the entire ground floor already ablaze. “When we got there, the fire had raced through the wooden structure,” said Station Officer Ahmad Fauzi.
Ten firemen and two engines were deployed. Employing water jets and foam, crews managed to bring the blaze under control by 9 pm. The home was unoccupied at the time, and no injuries were reported. The absentee owner, who resides overseas, was notified by a neighbour and returned immediately upon hearing the news.
Initial investigations by fire officers suggest an electrical short on the ground floor may have ignited the fire. “We’ve recovered charred wiring from the kitchen and will send it for laboratory examination,” explained Fire Investigation Officer Leong Wei Ming. A full report is expected within two weeks.
