Two victims of a recent online banking fraud have reclaimed every sen they lost, thanks to a swift intervention by DAP MP Chong Chieng Jen. These individuals, deceived into transferring funds to accounts controlled by fraudsters, initially encountered refusals from their bank when requesting transaction reversals.

After lodging formal complaints with DAP’s Legal and Human Rights Bureau, the two scam victims—each having sent several thousand ringgit under the belief they were paying legitimate merchants—turned to Chong for assistance. He immediately contacted the bank’s senior management, urging a fresh review of the cases in view of the claimants’ circumstances.

Under growing pressure, the bank agreed to refund the full amounts. In announcing the resolution, Chong commended the bank for eventually doing the right thing, while emphasising that consumers should never have to struggle so much to recover their money.

He called on all financial institutions to implement transparent, speedy procedures for handling unauthorised or fraudulent transactions so that honest customers aren’t left out of pocket. Chong also urged the government to establish a dedicated compensation fund for scam victims and pressed law-enforcement agencies to intensify efforts to dismantle the networks behind such schemes.

Finally, he reminded the public to always verify the authenticity of websites and sellers before making payments and to report any suspicious activity promptly to both their bank and the police.
