MIRI: After nearly three weeks offline, the traffic signals at the Niah–Miri Interchange are now back in service, the Miri City Council confirmed today. The lights—positioned at kilometre 8.2 on the Miri–Bintulu trunk road—went off in late May when copper cables were stolen, leaving drivers to traverse the busy junction without any signal guidance.
Council engineers, together with a specialist contractor, toiled around the clock to replace the pilfered wiring, refurbish the signal heads and modernise the junction’s electrical infrastructure. The restoration wrapped up on schedule, and the lights resumed normal operations early this morning.
Council President Peter Chin expressed gratitude to motorists for their patience during the outage and reminded everyone to obey the signals responsibly. “With peak-hour traffic levels restored, it’s essential that drivers adhere strictly to the signal phases and speed limits to ensure everyone’s safety,” he said.
To deter future thefts, the council is expediting the installation of CCTV cameras and enhanced lighting around the interchange. Motorists and nearby residents are also urged to report any suspicious behaviour to the authorities.
The city council reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining safe, efficient road networks and pledged to carry out regular inspections of all signalised intersections moving forward.
