The Miri Palliative Care Association (PCAM) has announced a significant advancement in enhancing end-of-life care in the city with an open tender for earthworks. This initiative will establish Miri’s first permanent hospice, marking a historic moment for the community.
This announcement was made during a press conference held at PCAM’s current premises in Taman Piasau, led by Sarawak Transport Minister Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, who also serves as the association’s patron.
Commitment to Compassionate Care
During the event, Lee emphasized that the development of the new centre demonstrates the Sarawak government’s and the Miri community’s unwavering dedication to providing terminally ill patients with compassionate, dignified, and holistic care.
“I still remember in January 2006 when the first Palliative Day Care Centre opened at Miri Hospital. From a small room, this service has now touched thousands of lives,” he reflected.
PCAM, officially registered in 2008, acquired its own premises in 2016 and is now embarking on a new phase with the construction of this permanent hospice.
Support and Future Plans
Lee mentioned that the Sarawak government allocated the land for this project in August 2020 and will continue to support its development. He also expressed his personal commitment to assist PCAM in achieving its fundraising goal of RM5 million.
Dr Doris Jong, chairperson of PCAM, recounted the beginnings of palliative care in Miri, which started in October 2005 when care was first offered to terminally ill patients at home.
She revealed that the new single-storey hospice will not only expand free home-care services but also enhance bereavement counselling, foster collaboration with Miri Hospital, and provide training for healthcare professionals and volunteers throughout northern Sarawak.
The total estimated cost for land filling, infrastructure works, and construction is RM5 million.
Dr Doris expressed her gratitude to the Sarawak government, corporate sponsors, volunteers, and community leaders, especially Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, for their ongoing support.
She also called upon the public to lend their expertise, time, or funds to help bring this essential project to fruition, highlighting that palliative care is centered on improving the quality of life for patients in their final days.
At the same event, PCAM member Richard Wong was appointed as the project manager for the land development and construction of the new palliative care centre.
