KUCHING: A student from Betong Vocational College has made Sarawak proud by being awarded the Premier Sarawak Golden Hand Award 2025 in the field of additional manufacturing.
Liew Jew Sheng emerged as the main winner in a highly competitive skills category, marking a significant achievement for the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions in Sarawak.
Recognition and Motivation
“I am very happy to receive this Golden Hand Award and I would like to thank my coach, Mr. Raffi, who guided me with great patience throughout this journey,” he expressed.
“This achievement motivates me to encourage more Sarawak youth to pursue the TVET path, which I believe plays a crucial role in developing skilled talent,” he stated to reporters at the Premier Sarawak Golden Hand Award ceremony held here today.
National Competition Ahead
In related news, Liew will represent Sarawak at the upcoming national competition scheduled to take place in Kuala Lumpur.
“I will undergo intensive training to compete with the best young talents from across Malaysia.
“Continuous training and self-discipline will be my main focus in preparation for the national-level competition,” he added.
The Path to Success
Further commenting, he mentioned that success in skill competitions requires consistent training, mental resilience, and a high level of commitment to enhance technical competence.
Sharing his views on TVET, Liew described vocational education as a pathway that equips students with practical skills that are not only relevant for careers but also useful in daily life.
Contribution to Development
“TVET directly contributes to the development of Sarawak by producing skilled workforce capable of supporting industrial growth and technological advancement,” he added.
In addition, Liew admitted he did not expect to win the Golden Hand Award.
“I consider this victory a delightful surprise and a humbling experience.
“This success is a result of the structured training environment at Betong Vocational College and the guidance from teachers who have shaped my confidence and technical abilities,” he remarked.
Inspiration from Family
Liew also revealed that his inspiration to enter the technical field came from his father, who runs an automotive repair workshop in Jelokong.
“Growing up in a workshop environment gave me early exposure to mechanical work, repairs, and problem-solving, which sparked my interest in technical and vocational skills.
“Moreover, teachers encouraged me to channel this interest through formal training and competitive platforms such as skill competitions,” he explained.
Strengthening the TVET Ecosystem
Liew’s success highlights the strength of Sarawak’s growing TVET ecosystem and the potential of vocational education in producing skilled professionals ready to face future challenges.
The Premier Sarawak Golden Hand Award continues to play a role in recognizing outstanding youth talent, thereby reinforcing the Sarawak government’s commitment to developing a highly skilled human capital.
Present at the event were the Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation, and Talent Development, Datuk Francis Harden Hollis, the Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Law and Bumiputera Customs), Datuk Jefferson Jamit Unyat, and the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Innovation, and Talent Development, Adana Jed.
