The plan by the Sarawak government to take over and transform both active and inactive logging roads, including village roads within logging zones, into state roads has received praise for its potential advantages for rural and interior communities.

Batu Danau assemblyman Dato Paulus Palu Gumbang highlighted that numerous logging roads in Sarawak, particularly those in Limbang, have deteriorated and are no longer properly maintained.

Improving Connectivity

“These roads are essential for residents, enhancing the connection between various settlements and urban areas,” he emphasized.

Paulus further remarked that the state’s initiative to assume control of existing logging roads and ensure their maintenance is a positive step, especially in regions where logging companies have stopped their operations.

“In Limbang, for instance, many roads have degraded to the point where some can only be navigated by motorcycles,” he pointed out.

Strengthening the Road Network

He expressed appreciation to the state government for this plan, which is expected to begin next year. The initiative is projected to reinforce the road infrastructure, enhance safety, and foster socio-economic growth in Sarawak’s rural and interior regions.

Paulus also praised Lee Ling Timber Sdn Bhd for its ongoing corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives, particularly those aimed at benefiting the Kelabit, Penan, and Iban communities.

He reiterated that this initiative is likely to strengthen the road network, improve safety, and accelerate socio-economic development in Sarawak’s rural and interior areas.

Community Support Initiatives

Moreover, he commended Lee Ling Timber for its proactive engagement in implementing CSR programs that support rural communities, particularly among the Penan, Kelabit, and Iban populations.

“The Christmas CSR program has brought joy to communities while helping to alleviate their challenges during the festive season,” he stated.

Paulus expressed hope that other major companies, including those involved in the Sarawak-Sabah Link Road (SSLR) and the Northern Coastal Highway (NCH) projects, would adopt similar CSR initiatives to benefit rural populations.

Also present at the event was Lee Ling Timber Sdn Bhd manager Kenneth Chieng Siong Woo.
