Sarawak’s pig-farming community could reap substantial benefits from an ongoing shortage of live pigs in Selangor, says Steven Choong, chairman of the Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Youth. In an interview with the Borneo Post, he noted that as local supply lags behind Selangor’s appetite, Sarawak producers are well-placed to step in and broaden their market reach on the Peninsula.
Choong highlights that the number of pig farms in Selangor has declined in recent years, driven by rising land costs, tighter environmental regulations, and labour shortages. “Numerous small and mid-sized pig farms in Selangor have shut down or scaled back, creating a supply void that Sarawak can effectively fill,” he stated.
The SUPP Youth leader argues that boosting exports to Selangor would not only raise income for Sarawak pig breeders but also stimulate growth in related sectors—feed milling, veterinary care, and logistics. He urged state authorities to assist farmers by improving refrigerated transport, creating more direct trade channels, and offering incentives to enhance farm biosecurity and animal health management.
Choong further encouraged Sarawak entrepreneurs to pursue value-added processing—such as chilled and frozen pork cuts—to satisfy Peninsular consumers’ quality expectations. He emphasised that meeting halal certification and traceability standards is essential for accessing higher-value retail and foodservice outlets in Selangor.
By addressing a neighbouring state’s unmet demand, Sarawak’s pork sector could achieve healthier profit margins and generate new rural employment opportunities, Choong said. He concluded that a coordinated effort—combining government support, private-sector investment, and industry best practices—could transform Selangor’s supply gap into sustained growth for Sarawak’s pork industry.
