KUCHING (Aug 29): Sarawak recorded one rabies positive case for the period between Aug 24 and 28 this year.

According to Kuching South Mayor Dato Wee Hong Seng, the location was at Sungai Asap in Belaga under Kapit Division, involving a stray dog.

“Even though there was just one case in the past week, and this case did not happen in Kuching, we must still remain vigilant against this deadly rabies,” he said during his Facebook Live session ‘Shall WEE Talk’ today.

Adding on, Wee said a mass anti-rabies vaccination drive would be carried out here next month, with the details to be announced soon.

He reminded all pet owners of the importance of vaccinating their dogs against rabies regularly.

“Rabies vaccination is not given once and for life. Your dog needs to be given the jab every year to protect it against rabies,” he stressed.

Meanwhile, the mayor announced that the just-concluded Kuching Festival Food Fair 2026 registered a total of 1,011,067 visitors.

In comparison, last year’s figure was 1,044,417.

“The highest daily turnout reached 76,225, and the lowest was at 14,648.

“The lowest daily turnout was due to extreme weather coupled with hazy condition,” he said.

Some 400 booths were featured in this year’s fair, which ran from July 22 to Aug 16.

In responding to a netizen’s question on how the total number of visitors was calculated, Wee said the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) personnel were stationed at all entry points to do head count.

“This head count ran from 4pm or 5pm; the total number of visitors was calculated based on a formula,” he said.
