Sarawak Metro has announced that the first of its new automated-rail-transit (ART) vehicles has rolled off the production line in China and is now en route by ship to Kuching. Manufactured by CRRC Qiqihar, these electric, rubber-tyred trains will form the cornerstone of the city’s upcoming light-metro network.

According to project representatives, the initial batch of ART cars was loaded onto a vessel at Tianjin Port on July 31 and is expected to dock at Kuching Port before the end of September. Upon arrival, the trains will undergo commissioning and safety evaluations ahead of a trial service slated for the final quarter of this year.

Each ART set comprises five permanently coupled cars, runs on a dedicated guideway, and can carry up to 400 passengers at speeds of up to 80 km/h. The rubber-tyred design ensures a quieter ride and accommodates steeper gradients than conventional rail. Sarawak Metro has placed orders for 24 trainsets—sufficient to operate the inaugural two lines linking the city centre with key suburban areas.

By mid-2025, the full fleet should be in position, allowing—once all track and station works are complete—a rapid and reliable alternative to road travel. The RM5.3 billion project is jointly funded by the Sarawak government and the federal Ministry of Transport, and will operate under a public-private partnership. Sarawak Metro confirms that local contractors will manage final assembly, maintenance, and day-to-day operations, creating new technical and service jobs across the state.
