KUCHING (March 6): A company in Kuching has become the first in Sarawak to produce white button mushrooms locally.
Minister for Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom visited the Borneo Highland Orchard facility at Mile 11 here on Friday.
Borneo Highland Orchard director Izzy Ng Yi Xin said the cultivation plant, which produces the white button mushroom species Agaricus bisporus, began operations last December.

“Within its first three months of operation, the facility has achieved a production capacity of more than 2,300 kilogrammes of white button mushrooms per month.
“The locally grown mushrooms are currently supplied to markets in Kuching and some to Sibu,” Ng told reporters.
She said the mushrooms can last up to seven days when stored at temperatures below 4 degrees Celsius.
The company also plans to hold a promotional roadshow here next month to introduce the locally cultivated mushrooms to consumers.
