Sarawak is sowing the groundwork for its future STEM talent at the elementary level, says Deputy Minister of Education, Science and Technological Research Datuk Julaihi Sagah. He told the press that introducing science, technology, engineering and mathematics early on will guarantee a continuous stream of proficient individuals as the state advances its development goals.

Speaking at the inauguration of Sarawak STEM Week in Kuching, Sagah showcased various programmes already in motion. These include refurbished science laboratories, roving STEM units that visit remote communities and coding lessons integrated into the Year 4 syllabus. There are also proposals to supply more schools with 3D printing devices, robotics kits and virtual reality equipment.

“We want children to investigate, to ask questions and to innovate from an early stage,” he remarked. “By making STEM education experiential and tactile, we enable students to cultivate problem-solving abilities that apply across any discipline.”

Sagah further noted that collaborations with industry partners—such as Petronas and other corporate backers—will finance instructor development and offer mentorship schemes. Throughout the week, students will compete in robotics challenges, drone racing and app creation contests, aiming to win scholarships and seed funding to expand their initiatives.

In the end, the minister emphasized that fostering young inventors is vital not only for Sarawak’s growth objectives but also for Malaysia’s shift towards a knowledge-driven, digital economy. “Our aim is straightforward,” he concluded. “By launching our STEM pipeline in primary schools, we establish a foundation for the engineers, researchers and business leaders of the future.”
