The federal Cabinet today approved a RM414 million allocation to renovate a network of former logging tracks in Sarawak and officially reclassify them as federal roads, Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof announced. The package will cover rehabilitation and surfacing works—including road widening, upgraded drainage and new or overhauled bridges—across about 400 kilometres of crucial rural routes that are still unpaved.

According to the minister, the upgrades aim to bring these roads in line with federal standards, enhancing safety and resilience against floods and landslips. “Upon completion, these stretches will be transferred to the Public Works Department (JKR) and maintained under the federal road network,” Datuk Seri Fadillah stated. “This initiative will improve connectivity for remote communities, facilitate the movement of agricultural and forestry products, and promote socio-economic development throughout Sarawak.”

The project will be implemented in phases over the next three years, with detailed design and tender processes to begin immediately. The first phase is expected to cover sections in the Belaga, Kapit and Belawai areas. Rural Development Minister Datuk Seri Mahdzir Khalid, who attended the announcement, described the upgrades as “transformational” for smallholders and native customary rights landowners, noting that better access will lower the cost of goods and spur new investment in local industries.

Sarawak’s state government has hailed the decision as a long-awaited measure to close a vital infrastructure gap. The Works Ministry explained that these roads were originally constructed by logging concessions but never fully met public-road specifications. Their conversion to federal roads will guarantee regular maintenance and faster response to damage, especially during the monsoon season.

With Cabinet approval secured, JKR plans to issue the first request for proposals by the end of the quarter. Once contracts are awarded, communities along these routes can anticipate safer travel, more reliable bus services and improved, year-round access to schools, clinics and markets. Datuk Seri Fadillah concluded, “This commitment is part of our broader effort to ensure balanced development across Malaysia, leaving no remote area behind.”
