Secondhand Raya Garment Donation Drive in Miri Sees Incredible Response

MIRI, May 22 — A community-run initiative in Miri to gather pre-loved Raya outfits has far exceeded expectations, with locals donating over 1,200 pieces in under three weeks. Led by a network of regional NGOs and backed by the Miri Municipal Council, the effort aimed to support low-income households in preparing for Hari Raya without financial strain.

From May 1 to May 18, donation stations were set up at Emart Miri, Boulevard Shopping Complex and the city’s community hall. Volunteers from Green Miri, Taman Selera Youth Association and Pujut Welfare Club sorted and packed items—from baju kurung and baju Melayu to kain samping and tudung—by size, gender and style.

“We expected a few hundred contributions, but the turnout was extraordinary,” said Cynthia Lee, project coordinator at Green Miri. “People queued before opening, schools held their own mini-drives, and local businesses supplied drop-off bins. It really demonstrated the community’s unity.”

By the end of the collection period, organisers had compiled more than 70 bundles of Raya wear. Distribution began on Tuesday at Sekolah Kebangsaan Pujut 3, where 150 families received complete outfits and modesty accessories ahead of Aidilfitri. Further handovers are planned at SK Senadin, SK Lopeng and a women’s shelter in Lutong.

One recipient, single mother of three Aishah Abdullah, shared her relief: “This is incredibly meaningful. My children can celebrate proudly without me having to choose between new clothes and groceries. I’m so grateful to everyone who contributed.”

Municipal Councilor Datuk Roland Ting praised the volunteer effort and encouraged residents to sustain this generosity year-round. “While Raya is a special time, we hope this spirit of sharing extends to other causes—whether aiding flood victims, supporting elderly neighbours or helping orphanages,” he said.

Organisers are already planning to expand the programme next year, discussing an online portal for garment requests and additional collection sites in rural areas around Miri. For now, they’re celebrating the success of the inaugural drive and the comfort it has brought to those in need.
