Sarikei, July 10 — Alleged unlawful U-turn is being cited as the cause of a fatal crash on the Sarikei–Sibu trunk road yesterday afternoon, the police reported.

Sarikei district police chief Supt Kong Aik Hock stated the accident took place at approximately 4.30 pm near the 12.3 km point along the bypass. The collision reportedly involved a white Perodua Myvi, operated by a 37-year-old man with a 31-year-old female passenger, which is suspected to have performed a prohibited U-turn in a no-U-turn section. A fully loaded Hino lorry traveling in the same direction was unable to swerve clear and struck the Myvi at high speed.

Both occupants of the Myvi were declared dead at the scene. The 45-year-old lorry driver sustained only minor bruises and was treated at Sarikei Hospital before being discharged.

“Our preliminary findings suggest the Myvi driver made an unsafe U-turn where signs expressly forbid it,” Supt Kong explained. “We are reviewing CCTV footage and witness accounts to establish the precise circumstances of the collision.”

No charges have been pressed so far as the investigation remains ongoing. Traffic police have reminded motorists to respect road signage and exercise heightened caution, especially on trunk roads shared by heavy trucks and smaller vehicles.
