The Women’s section of the Senadin branch of Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) organized an educational visit to Siti Payung, recognized as one of Miri’s premier producers of kek lapis (traditional Sarawak layer cake). This initiative is part of their ongoing commitment to enhance entrepreneurial knowledge while promoting the cultural heritage of Sarawak.
The delegation consisted of 30 members, led by Sarimah Buang, the Women’s chief of PBB Senadin, representing 11 sub-branches of the party. The visit offered them insights into the operations of Siti Payung since its inception in 2009.
Promoting Local Culture and Entrepreneurship
Owner Mohammad Hafidz Rohani was there to warmly welcome the guests, who learned about the key achievements of the business, including obtaining halal, MeSTI, GMP, and HACCP certifications, as well as expanding their market to international locations such as the USA and Qatar.
Sarimah emphasized, “This visit was more than just a casual outing; it serves as a vital platform to encourage women to pursue entrepreneurship and enhance their skills. Traditional Sarawak products like kek lapis and kelupis should be continuously promoted as symbols of our local identity and pride, highlighting the crucial role women play in fostering economic growth within the community.”
Hands-On Experience and Future Aspirations
She added, “Programs like this equip women with knowledge that can lead to new business opportunities, additional income, and an improved quality of life for their families.” The visitors enjoyed hands-on experience in making kek lapis at Siti Payung.
In his brief remarks, Mohammad Hafidz expressed gratitude for the visit and shared hopes for more community-driven development initiatives in the future. “This initiative reflects our continuous efforts to create opportunities for local women and support the growth of homegrown industries in Miri and Sarawak as a whole,” he remarked.
