According to the Miri police, a Miri resident has been swindled out of more than RM257,000 by an online investment fraud, officials confirmed today.

Senior Assistant Commissioner Mohd Kamarudin Mohd Zakaria explained that the 36-year-old first encountered a social media advert early last month claiming substantial profits from foreign exchange trading. Tempted by daily “earnings” credited to his account, he started moving his life savings into multiple bank accounts supplied by the scammers.

Over about three weeks, he transferred RM257,480 in total. Initially, he received small returns, which bolstered his trust in the operation. But when he attempted to withdraw a larger amount on June 18, all contact with the purported investment “advisors” vanished and he was barred from the online portal.

Realising the deception, he filed a report at the Miri district police station on June 20. The case is now under investigation under Section 420 of the Penal Code, which addresses cheating and inducing delivery of property by fraud.

ACP Mohd Kamarudin cautioned the public to be wary of internet-based investment schemes, especially those promising unusually high short-term gains. He recommended verifying any firm’s registration with the Securities Commission Malaysia, reviewing all terms and conditions thoroughly, and seeking independent financial advice before transferring funds.
