MIRI: Yesterday, Miri Hospital launched phase two of its School-in-Hospital initiative, a programme aimed at ensuring that young in-patients remain engaged with their education during treatment.

At the ceremony, Hospital Director Dr. Joseph Lim emphasised how vital learning is to a child’s convalescence and mental health. “Academic setbacks due to sickness can add pressure and slow recovery,” he noted. “By delivering lessons at the bedside, this programme alleviates that concern.”

Through this partnership with the Ministry of Health and the State Education Department, volunteer educators and trained hospital personnel will teach Bahasa Malaysia, English, Mathematics, and Science according to the national syllabus, to pupils from primary up to lower secondary. Lessons occur in an adapted ward classroom, and digital tablets let children participate in interactive online classes and keep connected with their home schools.

The initial trial, conducted earlier this year, involved 18 students and drew commendations from parents and teachers for lifting spirits and restoring routine. Expanding on that achievement, the current three-month programme aims to support over 30 in-patients, including those undergoing extended care.

Dr. Lim mentioned negotiations are underway to broaden the scheme to units like adolescent oncology and paediatric surgery, as well as to trial comparable programmes at Sarawak’s district hospitals. “Our objective is clear,” he added. “No child should have to opt between recovery and education.”
