A 61-year-old woman in Kuching fell victim to a phone scam, losing a staggering RM92,100 after being deceived by individuals impersonating government officials.

Kuching police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu reported that the incident occurred on November 3 when the victim received a call from someone claiming to be from the Customs Department. The caller informed her that a shipment valued at RM7 million, allegedly hers, had been seized in Kuala Lumpur.

Details of the Scam

The call was subsequently handed over to another person who identified herself as ‘Puan Lydia’ from the Anti-Money Laundering (AMLA) division. Under her direction, the victim was persuaded to transfer funds for what was described as an investigation by Bank Negara Malaysia.

This involved 19 transactions across three different bank accounts, totaling RM92,100. It was only when the suspect requested further payments to “settle the case” that the victim realized she had been conned.

From January 1 to December 9 of this year, the district’s Commercial Crime Investigation Department has recorded 98 cases with similar tactics, resulting in total losses amounting to RM6,960,575.50, including this recent incident.
