Cerisologo Sabut, the Kapit District officer, emphasized the importance of support from local non-governmental organizations (NGOs) for community-based rehabilitation centres, known as PPDKs. He highlighted that these centres are crucial for assisting children with special needs.

During a recent dinner event held as a pre-celebration for Christmas and New Year 2026, he stated, “A PPDK is designed to serve as a proper daycare for children, helping them develop essential living skills to foster their independence.”

Support and Challenges

While the government provides funding for the premises and staff salaries, there is a lack of resources for additional activities. “Thus, I urge the NGOs in our district to extend their support to the local PPDKs,” he remarked.

In addition, Stanley Ling, chairman of the PPDK management committee, shared that there are currently 34 children under the supervision of Ngaji Dukit and his team of four staff members. Ling pointed out significant challenges such as distance, logistics, and transportation.

Creating an Inclusive Society

“Many children with special needs come from rural longhouses and remote villages, making it difficult for them to access the centre; otherwise, we would have a greater number of trainees,” he explained. Ling also took the opportunity to express gratitude to the Kapit Lions Club and Kapit Health Clinic for their ongoing support to the PPDK.

With collective efforts from NGOs and the community, Cerisologo Sabut believes that a more inclusive and caring society can be built.
