The Home Ministry has wrapped up the processing of over 12,000 identity-document applications from communities in Sarawak’s interior, its minister revealed today. Conducted under an outreach initiative led by the National Registration Department (JPN) alongside other federal bodies, the campaign reached isolated settlements in Kapit, Belaga, Saratok and Kabong.
Key results of the operation included:
• 6,500 MyKad (identity cards) distributed to qualifying adults
• 3,200 MyKid (children’s identity cards) processed
• 2,300 MyPR (permanent resident) certificates approved
• Hundreds of birth and death certificates recorded
Home Minister Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin explained the drive was designed to tackle long-standing administrative backlogs that left many rural residents without formal papers. “Holding an identity card or birth certificate is a fundamental right that unlocks education, healthcare and social services,” he said. “By taking our registration services straight to these communities, we’re helping families overcome years of uncertainty.”
The mobile teams braved challenging terrain—often travelling by boat or four-wheel-drive—and set up temporary registration centres in community halls, schools and longhouse meeting rooms. Local district officers and village leaders pitched in, especially by translating forms into Iban, Bidayuh and other indigenous languages.
Several recipients praised the initiative:
• A 68-year-old farmer in Belaga, now with a MyKad, said he can finally vote and open a bank account.
• A mother of four in Kapit noted her school-aged children can enrol without further delay.
• A young man receiving his MyPR certificate described it as “life-changing,” enabling him to seek formal employment.
The Home Ministry plans to expand similar outreach to other under-served parts of Sarawak before year-end, aiming to eliminate undocumented status for all interior residents. Datuk Seri Hamzah added that ongoing coordination with state authorities and NGOs will help ensure nobody is left behind.
