The paternal grandfather of a 15-year-old girl is reaching out to the authorities to expedite her citizenship application. James Minggu @ Jembu Serang, 73, expressed his concerns regarding the application made by his granddaughter, Auroya Ladyanu, on November 28, 2023, as part of the National Registration Department’s (JPN) Special Task Force Operation Programme (PPK).

Auroya, born on November 14, 2010, is the daughter of James’ son Rodie Kanang and Indonesian Eka Susanti, and she is currently enrolled in Form 3 at SMK Kapit.

Ongoing Concerns

James has made multiple visits to the JPN Kapit Office over the past two years to inquire about the status of Auroya’s application. He reported that on May 25, 2024, he was informed that the application was still in process. On November 21, 2024, he learned that it was to be processed at the JPN Kuching headquarters.

On April 7, 2025, during another visit, he was told that the application was at the JPN headquarters in Putrajaya. However, as of October 21, 2025, there has still been no response regarding the application.

Seeking Answers

James is perplexed by the delays in processing Auroya’s application. He stated, “Auroya is growing up. When school reopens, she will be in Form 4. How much longer will JPN need to process her application?”

As Auroya’s grandfather and guardian, he is deeply concerned about the outcome of her citizenship application.

The federal government initiated the PPK to tackle the issue of statelessness in Sarawak. In 2024, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail indicated that the task force was initially set to conclude in August but was extended at the request of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

According to Saifuddin, this initiative showcases the government’s commitment to providing identification documents to its citizens while addressing legal and security considerations.
