KUCHING: The Sarawakian hammer throw star, Grace Wong Xiu Mei, has made a significant mark in regional sports history by delivering an exceptional performance that secured her the gold medal at the 2025 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games held in Suphachalasai Stadium, Bangkok.

Grace dominated the women’s hammer throw event, achieving an impressive distance of 65.41 metres. This remarkable throw not only earned Malaysia the top podium position but also shattered three major records: the SEA Games record, the national record, and her own personal best (PB).

Record-Breaking Performance

According to a post by Malaysia Athletics, Grace’s series of throws included significant improvements over her previous Malaysian record of 63.53m, which she set at the Tuanku Syed Putra Stadium earlier this year in August. Notably, she surpassed her previous record five times out of six throws, with her furthest throw clinching the gold medal.

Her outstanding performance placed her significantly ahead of her competitors, outperforming six other finalists and reaffirming her position as the SEA’s undisputed hammer throw champion.

Medal Standings

The host nation, Thailand, completed the podium with Mingkamon Koomphon taking silver with a throw of 60.74m, while Sawitree Kaewasuksri secured bronze with a best throw of 56.27m.

As per the most recent statistics from World Athletics, Grace currently ranks 161st in the global women’s hammer throw and is among the top eight in the Asian Championships.
