A former post office clerk has received a sentence of 22 years’ imprisonment and 24 strokes of the cane after pleading guilty to 52 counts of criminal breach of trust (CBT). This case involves unauthorized withdrawals from Amanah Saham Bumiputera (ASB) accounts.
Judge Iris Awen Jon delivered the sentence on Amirudin Hasra Hassan, aged 35, after taking into account the seriousness of his actions and the impact on public interest.
Details of the Case
Amirudin is facing a total of 199 charges under Section 408 of the Penal Code, including the 52 he has admitted to. He has already pleaded guilty to 48 charges, with sentencing scheduled for January 22, 2026.
The accused has contested the remaining 99 CBT charges, which are being heard in front of different Sessions Court judges. Case management has been set for January 22, 2026 and January 26, 2026.
Investigation Findings
According to the investigation, the Lundu Post Office conducted a review of withdrawal transactions from January 2024 to January 2025, uncovering numerous suspicious activities.
Initial findings indicated that the accused, while working as a counter staff, made withdrawals between RM500 and RM5,000 from ASB accounts belonging to 12 victims aged from 50 to over 80 years without their knowledge.
Closed-circuit television footage confirmed that Amirudin executed these transactions in the absence of the investors, raising further concerns about his conduct.
An audit revealed a total of 199 unauthorized withdrawals amounting to RM654,300, with Amirudin using his own teller ID to access the victims’ accounts.
The prosecution was led by deputy public prosecutors Mohamad Aiman Mutallib Mohamad Shariff, Ruvinasini Pandian, Adriana Maisarah Mohd Farid, and Asmawi Nur Haqim Mokhtar, while the accused did not have legal representation.
