Nancy Shukri, the Minister of Women, Family and Community Development, assured that the preparations to address potential flooding, following a recent heavy rain warning from the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), are well in place and pose no concerns.

“Preparations are not an issue, God willing. It is not that we are being arrogant about this, but everything has already been instructed to be on standby,” she stated to reporters after officiating the Program Ceria Kasih dan Sumbangan ‘Back to School’ Sesi Persekolahan 2026, organized by Yayasan Kebajikan Negara (YKN) at the Hikmah Exchange Event Centre.

Response and Readiness

She emphasized that the readiness is bolstered by the presence of welfare officers stationed in every district throughout the country.

“We are present in every district. When we are present in every district, it makes it easier for us to provide assistance, God willing,” she explained.

As of 4:30 PM on Sunday, there were eight temporary evacuation centres (PPS) active across five states, accommodating 93 families or 289 individuals.

Evacuation Centres and Assistance

“These evacuation centres are opened for the safety and welfare of the victims. In terms of action by our department, the Social Welfare Department has initiated the opening of evacuation centres and self-registration for evacuees through the MyIBJKM system, which we launched recently, alongside the distribution of basic necessities. Relief supplies have been confirmed to be sufficient to meet the needs of victims at these centres.

“This is the information we have obtained so far. However, I will receive updates every morning at 8 AM,” she added.

Additionally, Nancy discussed her recent trip to Turkmenistan, where she represented Malaysia in an international program dedicated to women’s empowerment.

International Engagements

“I was asked to share Malaysia’s women empowerment programmes with other countries,” she noted, highlighting the strong interest shown by participants in Malaysia’s achievements, such as women constituting over 60 percent of public university students and nearly universal female participation in primary and secondary education.

She remarked that the visit also provided Malaysia with insights into how other nations organize national programs and support women through initiatives in arts, culture, agriculture, and economic self-sufficiency.
