KUCHING (Aug 28): Construction of the dedicated Autonomous Rapid Transit (ART) lane across Sungai Kuap is nearing completion following the installation of the final girder for its 400m bridge.

The milestone marks a major step forward for the Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS) project, with the works now focused on completing the bridge ahead of the ART pilot operation scheduled for the end of this year.

Sarawak Metro Sdn Bhd said the bridge would link the dedicated ART lane along the 27.6km Blue Line, connecting Rembus in Kota Samarahan to Hikmah Exchange in Kuching.

“The Blue Line, currently under construction under two work packages, includes 15 stations and is part of Phase 1 of the KUTS project.

“Package 1 of the Blue Line runs from the Rembus ART depot to the Northbank-Ibraco ART station in the Northbank area,” it said in a statement.

The package is being undertaken by a joint venture between Ibraco Construction Sdn Bhd and China Railway Engineering Corporation (M) Sdn Bhd (ICJV).

Phase 1 of KUTS also comprises the 12.3km Red Line from Kuching Sentral to Pending and the 10.5km Green Line from Pending to the Yayasan Sarawak roundabout in Petra Jaya.

The latest milestone is expected to further advance efforts to establish a modern and efficient urban public transport network connecting Kuching and its surrounding areas.
