Federal Transport Minister and Sarawak Chief Minister Fadillah Yusof says it is unlikely that Parliament will consider the state government’s plan to add 17 seats to the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly before the end of this year.
Fadillah explained that although Sarawak has already completed its internal review of electoral boundaries and prepared its proposal, the tight legislative schedule and the looming general election make it impractical to get the necessary constitutional amendment through both houses of Parliament in time.
Under the current process, any increase in the number of state seats must first receive the Sarawak legislature’s approval, then secure a two-thirds majority in the Dewan Rakyat, followed by the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s consent, and finally be endorsed by the Dewan Negara. Fadillah noted that meeting all these requirements before year’s end would be “very challenging.”
He added that discussions on the matter will resume once the next parliamentary term begins, and he called on Sarawak’s federal representatives to champion the proposal when the debate resumes. The state assembly currently has 65 seats; if approved, the addition of 17 new constituencies would bring the total to 82.
Fadillah stressed that the redelineation exercise aims to balance voter numbers across constituencies and strengthen urban-rural representation, saying Sarawak’s rapid development and population growth have made the adjustment necessary to ensure fair and equitable representation for all communities.
