The ‘Semai Inklusif’ (Inclusive Seeding) programme aims to empower the community of persons with disabilities (OKU) in Sarawak by providing them with resilient urban farming skills through hands-on training and a structured, supportive learning environment.
This initiative is being implemented under the APPGM-SDG in partnership with the Sarawak CSO-SDG Alliance and the Sarawak Disabled Skills Development Association (SOSDA). It focuses on enhancing both agricultural knowledge and personal development for all participants.
Empowering Participants
Dunstan, the programme lead at SOSDA, oversees the training efforts and emphasizes that the project is designed to equip participants with practical skills in farming, ranging from seed sowing to harvesting, while fostering confidence and independence.
“When we provide individuals with the right tools and support, they flourish in multiple aspects — not just as farmers, but as empowered individuals. That is the essence of ‘Semai Inklusif’,” he remarked.
Participants, including those with no prior experience in farming, learn to cultivate microgreens and practice urban farming techniques using grow lights and indoor tools.

Personal Growth and Community Impact
Many participants have expressed how the programme has spurred their personal growth.
“I feel proud because I can grow something on my own. It makes me happy to see the microgreens ready for harvest. I never thought I could do this before,” shared one participant.
This initiative contributes to several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including No Poverty (SDG 1), Decent Work and Economic Growth (SDG 8), Sustainable Cities and Communities (SDG 11), Responsible Consumption and Production (SDG 12), and Life on Land (SDG 15).
In addition to technical skills, the programme fosters teamwork and community support while providing avenues for supplementary income.
‘Semai Inklusif’ welcomes OKU individuals, caretakers, youth, retirees, and community members who are eager to learn how to grow vegetables for their food needs.
No prior farming experience is necessary.
With ongoing collaboration among project partners and guidance from SOSDA, ‘Semai Inklusif’ aspires to broaden its outreach and reinforce its role in developing a resilient and inclusive farming community in Sarawak.
