Persons with disabilities (PwDs) play an essential role in the social and economic development of Sarawak. Their complete involvement is crucial for achieving sustainable progress, stated Datuk Mohammad Razi Sitam, the State Deputy Minister for Women, Childhood and Community Development II (Community Wellbeing Development).
He emphasized the government’s dedication to empowering the PwD community through various initiatives, including inclusive education, equitable career opportunities, and improved accessibility. Furthermore, he mentioned the importance of collaboration with non-governmental organisations (NGOs) as strategic partners in this mission.
Commitment to Sustainable Development
“Under the Post Covid Development Strategy 2030 framework, Sarawak aims to achieve high-income developed state status by 2030,” Razi conveyed.
“Real progress must benefit all segments of society without exclusion,” he added during the Sarawak PwD Day 2025 celebration at Imperial Hotel Kuching.
Razi characterized the annual event as more than just a ceremony, highlighting its significance in showcasing the state government’s commitment to fostering an inclusive society where every citizen, regardless of ability, can participate fully in community life.
Achievements and Recognition
In a state as diverse as Sarawak, Razi stressed the importance of nurturing the spirit of unity in diversity, which includes the full participation of all groups, including the PwD community.
He also pointed out the remarkable achievements of Sarawakian PwDs on a global scale, especially in sports, where they have consistently broken world records.
This year’s theme, ‘Inclusive PwD Society, Key to Social Progress’, underscores the government’s perspective that the involvement of PwDs is foundational to sustainable development and societal progress.
“The success of building an inclusive society depends on collective effort,” Razi noted.
Events like PwD Day are crucial for raising awareness, reducing stigma, and strengthening connections between PwDs, their families, and the broader community.
Honoring Contributions
“We want society to recognize persons with disabilities as valuable contributors to Sarawak’s social, economic, and leadership development,” he stated.
The PwD Day 2025 celebration honored individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to the PwD community.
Among the award recipients were Francis Johen, a former Native Court Magistrate, honored as a Special PwD Figure for exemplifying that disability is no barrier to success, and Yeoh Suh Chan, a hearing-impaired artist, who received the newly introduced Abilympics Award for her achievements in painting, including a Silver Medal at the 2016 International Abilympics Championship.
Community Support and Initiatives
Parents like Adzohari Jamil, a visually impaired PwD who guided all three of his children to university graduation, and David Ngu Tai Giin, who advocates for early intervention for his autistic child, were also recognized.
Organizations promoting inclusivity were similarly acknowledged; the Kuching South City Council (MBKS) received the inaugural Caring Local Authority Award for creating Ausome Park, Sarawak’s first autism-friendly outdoor playground. Ambang Wira Sdn Bhd was named Caring Employer for PwD for providing employment opportunities and supporting participation in the Paralympics.
Samarahan Community-Based Rehabilitation Centre was praised for excellence as a Community-Based Rehabilitation Centre, while the Sarawak PwD Skills Development Association was recognized for preparing PwD participants for the 2027 International Abilympics.
Additionally, SK Kebangsaan Matang Jaya (Secondary) and SK Kebangsaan Tabuan Ulu (Primary) were awarded for their outstanding Integrated Special Education Programmes.
