KUCHING (Jan 23): A 28-year-old man was sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment and two strokes of the cane by the Sessions’ Court here on Friday for robbing an eatery in Kota Sentosa earlier this week.
Judge Iris Awen Jon imposed the sentence on Nur Muhamaad Zaitul Ikhmal Reki following his guilty plea to a charge under Section 392 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum jail term of 14 years and a fine or whipping upon conviction.
The accused robbed the eatery in Kota Sentosa, Padawan district at about 3.40am on Monday (Jan 19).
According to the facts of the case, the accused posed as a customer to purchase drinks. He was dressed in a black shirt and cap, paired with blue jeans.
After making payment at the counter, he went behind the till and grabbed the sales money from the cash drawer.
When a worker attempted to stop him, the accused used force and threatened her. The worker later lodged a police report, with losses amounting to RM2,500.40.
Police apprehended the accused later that night at a supermarket parking lot in Matang, based on information from members of the public.
Closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage confirmed his involvement and identified the vehicle used in the robbery.
Deputy public prosecutor Chuah Kai Sheng, appearing for the prosecution, urged the court to impose a deterrent sentence, citing a concerning 4,274 such cases recorded across Malaysia last year.
The accused was unrepresented during proceedings.
