A driver died in the early hours of Saturday after his sedan collided with a lorry and caught fire on the Pan Borneo Highway near Bekenu, Miri.

Miri district police chief ACP Lim Meng Seah said that around 3.15 am, officers and fire crews rushed to reports of a vehicle ablaze on the eastbound route. They discovered a mangled passenger car fully engulfed in flames, and inside the twisted wreckage lay the sole occupant’s body. Despite firefighters’ efforts to extinguish the fire, the 32-year-old driver was declared dead at the scene.

The 28-year-old lorry driver escaped unscathed. The highway was closed for several hours while authorities cleared debris and the burnt-out vehicle before gradually reopening the road once it was deemed safe.

Lim added that an investigation under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 has been launched to establish the cause of the accident. Anyone who witnessed the collision or possesses relevant dash-cam footage is urged to contact the Miri district police headquarters.
