Talent retention among healthcare workers is essential for establishing a robust healthcare system, emphasized Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian.
He stated, “We must support our specialists through professional development, recognition, and appropriate incentives so they can continue serving Sarawakians effectively.” This was shared during the Malaysian Medical Association’s (MMA) 53rd anniversary dinner.
Encouraging Professional Involvement
Dr Sim, who also serves as Minister of Public Health, Housing and Local Government, encouraged doctors to engage actively with MMA and similar organizations to bolster the medical profession.
“Being part of MMA or any professional body should be a commitment made during both favorable and challenging times, not just when issues arise. Instead of asking, ‘What can they do for me?’, consider asking, ‘What can I do for them?’,” he remarked.
In addition, Dr Sim pointed out that the management of clinical waste collection and disposal in rural areas has often been neglected. However, Sarawak is working on state-led solutions for clinical waste management.
Improving Healthcare Access
“Currently, facilities located outside Kuching, such as Bario, Belaga, Limbang, Lawas, and Mukah, are struggling with high logistical costs and inconsistent services,” he noted.
“Our goal is to reduce costs for clinics and hospitals, enhance service consistency, expand coverage, and safeguard public health and the environment,” he explained.
To this end, he mentioned that Sarawak is dedicated to extending specialist services to rural hospitals and clinics, thereby improving healthcare access throughout the state, particularly in the areas of cardiology, oncology, and surgical care.
