Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi formally transferred 80 rural water supply schemes, worth RM3.47 billion, to Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg today. The short handover event was held in Kuching, signifying a significant achievement in the federal government’s National Rural Water Supply Programme.

Ahmad Zahid noted that the schemes – covering new piped water systems, reservoir enlargements, borehole drilling and enhancements to treatment plants – are expected to supply clean, treated water to over 120,000 homes across 25 Sarawak districts such as Betong, Dalat, Mukah, Sibu and Lawas. He underscored that clean water access is vital for boosting public health, narrowing economic gaps and empowering rural communities.

Emphasising the collaboration between Putrajaya and Kuching, the Deputy Prime Minister said these endeavours reflect a mutual pledge to Sarawak’s sustained development goals, notably the drive to uplift living conditions in the most isolated villages. He added that all 80 project sites have now moved into execution, aiming for completion within two to three years.

Premier Abang Johari, in his reply, expressed gratitude to the federal administration for its ongoing assistance and highlighted that these water supply improvements align with Sarawak’s Rural Transformation Strategy 2030. He mentioned that besides installing pipelines and constructing treatment centres, local water-user committees will be trained in operation and upkeep, guaranteeing long-term functionality.

Both officials shared optimism that upon completion, the enlarged network will significantly cut water supply interruptions, improve public sanitation and stimulate economic growth in Sarawak’s interior regions — tangible progress towards closing the urban-rural gap.
