MIRI: Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas commended the swift and united effort on Sunday evening when a fire erupted in Kampung Wireless, noting that joint action by multiple agencies and locals prevented the inferno from inflicting greater harm.
According to Uggah, the blaze started at about 6 pm among a cluster of wooden dwellings. Crews from the Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department, assisted by police, municipal workers, welfare officers, and neighborhood volunteers, hurried to the scene. Their prompt intervention, he pointed out, stopped the flames from spreading to adjacent houses.
“In emergencies like this, every second is crucial,” Uggah remarked after touring the site the following morning. “Thanks to the immediate response from both emergency teams and residents, just five homes were entirely lost and two suffered partial damage. Any delay could have led to far worse consequences.”
No fatalities or injuries were reported. Displaced families were accommodated temporarily at the local community hall, where welfare personnel offered hot meals, bedding, and counseling services. Uggah also went to the hall in person to hand out financial assistance and reassure those affected of the state government’s commitment to rebuilding their homes.
He urged homeowners to inspect their electrical wiring annually and keep fire extinguishers readily available. “Routine upkeep and basic safety precautions can be lifesaving,” he said. “We must unite to stop fires before they begin.”
The Deputy Premier expressed his thanks to everyone involved—including citizens who reported the fire and helped with evacuations. “This incident demonstrates how vigilance and collaboration can safeguard people and property,” he added.
