Deputy PM commits to funding river-cleaning machinery, aims to resolve persistent silt issues impacting Miri’s fishing community
MIRI—Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has revealed that the federal government will support procurement of equipment to clear river sediment threatening Miri’s fishing sector. On his visit to Tanjung Lobang jetty earlier this week, he interacted with boat operators who repeatedly raised concerns that accumulating deposits are blocking them from launching and hauling their vessels.
According to Ahmad Zahid, an initial sum of about RM5 million will be allocated promptly to purchase dredgers, high-powered water pumps and other necessary equipment. “It’s vital that our fishermen can sail without delays and safely return each day,” he remarked. “By maintaining clear waterways, we safeguard their income and uphold the economic heartbeat of our coastal communities.”
Beyond immediate measures, the Deputy PM instructed the Department of Irrigation and Drainage (DID) to carry out a comprehensive sediment-flow analysis and identify key blockage points. He also urged state and municipal agencies to tighten enforcement against unauthorized logging and river sand extraction upstream—activities that have intensified erosion and sent finer particles downstream.
Plans are now moving forward to form a joint task force comprising the DID, Sarawak Forestry Corporation and Marine Department to oversee river maintenance and perform scheduled dredging operations. In closing, Ahmad Zahid appealed to all parties—fishing cooperatives, village leaders and environmental NGOs—to collaborate on an integrated watershed-management plan, ensuring Miri’s rivers stay navigable and vibrant for the long term.
