Sarawak’s staging of the 2026 Open Boxing International in Miri is a clear testament to the state’s growing reputation as a capable host of major global sporting events, said Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.
Slated for late August 2026 at the newly upgraded Miri Indoor Stadium, the weeklong tournament is expected to draw several hundred competitors and officials from more than 30 countries. According to Datuk Amar Uggah, who also chairs Sarawak’s Sports Council, the event will showcase the state’s modern facilities, efficient logistics and warm hospitality—all of which have been honed through recent successes in regional meets and cultural festivals.
Preparations are already well underway. A RM3 million state grant has been allocated toward final touches on the stadium’s lighting and seating, while Miri’s hotels and transport networks have mapped out shuttle services to ensure athletes and guests move smoothly between venues, training camps and accommodation. In addition, local tourism operators are designing special weekend packages for visiting fans keen to combine sport with Sarawak’s renowned culinary, cultural and wildlife attractions.
“For Sarawak, every international competition we host isn’t just about the medals,” Datuk Amar Uggah said. “It’s about demonstrating our ability to deliver world-class events, motivating our young athletes, and opening doors for our communities to connect with the world.”
He went on to highlight the long-term benefits for grassroots boxing: several local clubs will receive upgraded equipment to train alongside foreign coaches, and a series of workshops will be held for referees and judges to raise officiating standards across Borneo.
Local boxing enthusiasts, too, have welcomed the announcement. Sarawak Boxing Association president Dr. Emily Ong noted that hosting a global tournament on home soil not only gives rising Sarawakian pugilists a chance to compete against international rivals, but also promises to spark greater public interest in the sport.
With less than two years to go, state authorities are now calling on volunteers, sponsors and community groups to lend their support. “This event offers a platform to strengthen our sports ecosystem and to showcase the very best of Sarawak,” Datuk Amar Uggah said. “We’re ready—and we look forward to showing the world what Miri can do.”
