The fight against drug abuse cannot solely rely on one group; it demands the active involvement of schools, parents, organizations, and every sector of society, as each has a vital role to play.

According to Pemanca Datuk Jason Tai Hee, deputy president of the Sibu Division Chinese Community Chiefs Association, the threats posed by drugs have become increasingly complex, evolving into new forms that are more challenging to detect.

Understanding the Evolving Drug Threats

“Today, drugs can be found disguised as sweets, vape liquids, party drinks, and even beauty or energy products.

This danger is no longer confined to hidden back alleys; it has infiltrated our schools, social media platforms, and even our homes.

Thus, it is imperative for parents, educators, community leaders, colleagues, and friends to remain vigilant at all times,” he remarked during an anti-drug campaign at SMK Kwong Hua.

His speech was delivered by Penghulu Lau Hieng Wuong at the event, attended by notable figures such as Kevin Lau, a member of the Sibu Rural District Council, the school principal Wong Ling Jiong, local community leader Penghulu Wong Ung, and the organizing chairman of the campaign, Kapitan Chew Hoo Kiong.

Community Engagement and Support

Tai emphasized that as a community, all parties must engage continuously and proactively through talks, workshops, outreach programs, and ongoing engagement, including responsible use of social media.

“Those grappling with addiction are not our adversaries; they are individuals in need of compassion, support, and rehabilitation.

The true enemy is the network that profits from their suffering,” he pointed out, describing the battle against drugs as a ‘marathon requiring unity, resilience, and long-term commitment’.

In his remarks, Kevin expressed his belief that students today are knowledgeable and have access to various information sources.

“I trust that they recognize the destructive and dangerous nature of drugs. However, unless they personally encounter drugs, they may not fully comprehend the extent of the danger and horror involved,” he said.

Challenges of Modern Drug Awareness

“Some individuals may get involved unintentionally or due to misunderstandings, while others might be influenced by their surroundings and choose to experiment.

What is even more concerning is when someone feels pressured to follow trends or peer pressure,” he noted, highlighting the risks associated with electronic cigarettes or vapes.

“These products are often perceived as modern and trendy, with some questioning their actual harm.

In reality, we cannot be certain of the chemical substances released or the hidden contents within them, which is what is most alarming.”

The event also featured a sharing session by a former drug addict, David Hii, who is now an anti-drug activist.
