Jumlah mangsa banjir di Sabah terus meningkat akibat hujan lebat yang berlanjutan sejak beberapa hari lepas, manakala Kerajaan Sarawak pula telah membuka Pusat Pemindahan Sementara (PPS) pertama bagi menempatkan mangsa di negeri itu.

Menurut Jabatan Kebajikan Masyarakat Sabah, setakat petang semalam sejumlah 2,345 penduduk daripada 580 keluarga telah dipindahkan ke 15 PPS di daerah Keningau, Tenom dan Beaufort. Daerah Beaufort mencatat mangsa terbanyak iaitu 980 orang, diikuti Keningau (740) dan Tenom (625). Banjir berlaku akibat sistem hujan konvektif yang melanda sejak Sabtu lalu, menyebabkan paras air sungai melepasi tahap amaran.

Di Sarawak, Menteri Muda Pengurusan Bencana negeri memaklumkan bahawa PPS pertama dibuka di Dewan Orang Ramai Kampung Lubok Antu, Sri Aman semalam selepas hujan lebat mengakibatkan beberapa kampung di sepanjang Sungai Batang Lupar dinaiki air. Seramai 120 penduduk daripada 30 keluarga telah berpindah dan ditempatkan di pusat itu. Barisan hadapan seperti Angkatan Pertahanan Awam Malaysia (APM) dan Jabatan Bomba dan Penyelamat dikerah untuk operasi menyelamat serta menyediakan keperluan asas.

Bagaimanapun, ramalan cuaca MetMalaysia menjangkakan hujan lebat akan berterusan di kebanyakan kawasan Sabah dan Sarawak dalam tempoh 24 hingga 48 jam akan datang. Penduduk di kawasan rendah dan berhampiran sungai dinasihatkan bersiap sedia menghadapi potensi kenaikan air serta mematuhi arahan pihak berkuasa tempatan demi keselamatan.
