Title: Diesel Smuggling Attempt Thwarted off Kudat Coast
In the early hours yesterday, marine enforcement teams intercepted and confiscated a load of illicit diesel off Kudat’s coast in Sabah. Acting on a tip-off, personnel from the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) and the Marine Operations Force (Force 5) detected a dubious wooden vessel approximately two nautical miles from Pulau Billean at about 3 a.m.
Once aboard, officers uncovered 16 blue steel drums—each holding roughly 200 litres—of subsidised diesel stowed on the deck. The three crew members leapt into the sea and escaped, but the boat and its cargo were towed to Kudat Jetty for further inspection.
Commander Mohd Faizal Rashid, head of MMEA Kudat, stated that the agency had been monitoring unlawful fuel shipments in the area for weeks. “This operation delivers a substantial setback to syndicates aiming to smuggle subsidised diesel into neighboring waters for financial gain,” he remarked, adding that the seized diesel’s estimated street value is about RM6,400.
The case has been referred to the Royal Malaysian Customs Department for investigation under Section 117(c) of the Customs Act 1967. If found guilty, the ringleader may face a fine up to five times the value of the goods and a potential prison sentence.
Authorities continue regular patrols along Sabah’s northern maritime boundaries, urging fishermen and coastal residents to report any suspicious vessels or activities.
