The recent Cabinet reshuffle marks a significant step towards leadership regeneration, placing a strong emphasis on young leaders while striving to maintain political stability within the unity government.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim pointed out that many newly appointed ministers and deputy ministers belong to the second and third generation of leadership, primarily in their 30s and 40s, with some even younger.

New Leaders and Future Prospects

He noted that the overall strategy for placing new appointees was focused on younger individuals, highlighting figures such as Dr Mohammed Taufiq Johari, Akmal Nasrullah Mohd Nasir, Datuk Mustapha Sakmud, and Datuk Sri Arthur Joseph Kurup, who are relatively younger.

“It’s time to project this new leadership. Initially, we wanted to ensure the coalition was solidified. Now, I believe we are strong enough to allow young leaders their chance,” he stated during a briefing with editors-in-chief of local and international media.

Accompanying him were Bernama’s Chief Executive Officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin and Editor-in-Chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj, with a total of 92 media personnel present at the event.

Cabinet Restructuring and Expectations

Yesterday, Anwar announced a Cabinet reshuffle involving 28 ministers and deputy ministers, which included changes in portfolios and new appointments aimed at enhancing administrative efficiency and ensuring effective implementation of government policies.

During the first Cabinet meeting post-reshuffle, Anwar acknowledged the government’s weaknesses and highlighted the increasing public expectations for improvement.

“Am I fully satisfied with the performance? They can inquire about my performance as well. I also have my limitations. Given the opportunity, I would certainly approach things differently, but I am part of a coalition,” he remarked.

He emphasized the importance of government stability, stating that it is crucial for their success.

When asked about his expectations from the new Cabinet, Anwar expressed a desire for ministers and deputy ministers to enhance their performance.

“For 2025, ministers must listen to the people and address reasonable issues raised. They should present a more courteous image and strive for improvement. That was the advice I shared with them today,” he added.

Swift Implementation of Reforms

Anwar indicated that after three years in government, the administration must now act swiftly and implement reforms effectively, aligning with public expectations.

“The public expects faster action, more effective reforms, and a commitment to improvement as we move forward,” he stated.

On the topic of senior ministers who were not included in the new Cabinet, Anwar mentioned that it was time for them, such as Datuk Dr Mohd Na’im Mokhtar and Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa, to take on different roles.

He commended both for their contributions during their tenures, highlighting Dr Zaliha’s effective management of her portfolio.

Inclusivity and Future Elections

Touching on the appointment of Hannah Yeoh as Minister of Federal Territories, Anwar noted that this decision aims to ensure that public services cater to all races. He remarked that rejecting individuals based on ethnicity is both inappropriate and frustrating.

“When a non-Malay minister is appointed, accusations arise claiming that it marginalizes the Malays. The truth is that civil servants from all backgrounds work as a cohesive team to serve the public,” he clarified.

Regarding potential general elections, Anwar stated that it is not currently a priority, focusing instead on implementing reforms and addressing the challenges faced by the rakyat, especially concerning the rising cost of living.

These issues will be his main priorities moving into next year, with hopes for continued improvement.
