AirBorneo has begun its inaugural domestic connection, operating non-stop flights between Kota Kinabalu and Kuala Lumpur. This morning’s maiden service landed at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), marking a key achievement for the Sabah-based airline.
Powered by an ATR 72-600 turboprop, the new link will operate once daily in both directions. Departures from Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) are set for 8:00 a.m., with arrivals in Kuala Lumpur at 10:15 a.m. The return journey leaves KLIA at 11:15 a.m. and touches down in Kota Kinabalu at 1:30 p.m.
Lim Wei Chung, AirBorneo’s CEO, hailed the KL route as “a strategic move to extend our reach beyond Borneo.” He noted that the ATR 72-600 was chosen for its excellent fuel economy and ideal performance on regional hops. “We’re dedicated to providing Sabah residents with more travel options to the peninsula, at competitive rates and with on-time reliability,” Lim said during a press briefing at KKIA before departure.
Fares start from RM199 one-way, inclusive of taxes and service fees, with promotional seats on sale immediately. Passengers may check in up to 20 kg of luggage and bring 7 kg of cabin baggage.
Welcoming AirBorneo’s first domestic service, Malaysia’s Transport Minister Anthony Loke commented that increased competition on the KK–KL sector typically lowers airfares and enhances service standards. “We support new entrants that spur growth in aviation and offer travellers more choices,” he stated.
Looking ahead, AirBorneo plans to add destinations like Penang and Johor Bahru domestically, as well as routes to nearby ASEAN cities. For now, the focus is on maintaining a dependable daily shuttle between Sabah’s capital and Malaysia’s principal business hub.
