KUCHING (Aug 27): Thirty schools in Lubok Antu will be temporarily closed from tomorrow due to unhealthy air quality caused by haze.

The Sarawak Education Department (JPN Sarawak) said in a statement that the closure involves 28 primary schools with a total of 2,242 pupils and two secondary schools with 1,793 students.

It said the decision was made based on the Air Pollutant Index (API) readings recorded as of 8pm today.

The API reading in Lubok Antu stood at 200 at 8pm, after reaching 210 at 4pm.

“JPN Sarawak always prioritises the welfare, health and safety of pupils, particularly when facing hot weather or any unexpected weather conditions.

“The hot weather currently affecting the country has also caused several locations in Sarawak to record unhealthy API readings,” it said.

JPN Sarawak said any changes or latest developments concerning the school closures would be announced from time to time.

It also reminded schools to comply with the prescribed standard operating procedures and refer to the Education Ministry’s Circular No. 1 of 2019 on measures to safeguard the health and safety of pupils in schools located in areas affected by critical haze conditions.

“All schools are urged to prioritise the health of pupils and teachers at all times,” it said.

Meanwhile, all educational institutions under JPN Sarawak have been advised to comply with the guidelines under the Education Ministry’s Circular No. 3 of 2023 on outdoor activities at educational institutions under the ministry during hot weather.

JPN Sarawak also urged educational institutions to closely monitor air quality by referring to the Department of Environment’s Air Pollutant Index Management System (APIMS) for the latest API readings in their respective areas or districts.

They were also advised to comply with recommendations issued by the Health Ministry from time to time to safeguard the health of pupils and members of the educational community.

“JPN Sarawak takes seriously the health, safety and wellbeing of all its personnel,” it added.
