The Sarawak administration has acted swiftly to ensure Long Lellang’s only passage remains usable by drawing on state contingency funds for urgent repairs, even as it awaits the corresponding release from the federal Ministry of Rural and Regional Development (MARRIS).

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas confirmed today that RM2 million was immediately allocated to clear debris from landslides, stabilize vulnerable slopes and repair damaged drainage along the highland road to the Kelabit upland settlement. The work began earlier this week under the Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR) and is being executed by a local contractor.

“We’re not going to let the community be cut off while we wait for federal funds,” Uggah told reporters after presiding over a coordination meeting in Kuching. “These emergency steps will keep essential supplies flowing until the full rehabilitation project kicks off.”

Under a prior federal budget provision, MARRIS has earmarked RM8 million for a comprehensive upgrade of the Long Lellang route—but Sarawak’s treasury must front the initial phase. Uggah noted that the ministry expects its share to arrive within four to six weeks. Once received, JKR will widen critical segments, upgrade pavement standards and install robust retaining walls in the most landslide-prone zones.

Local assemblyman Dennis Ngau, representing the Ba’kelalan constituency, praised the state’s prompt action. “For residents of Long Lellang, that road is their lifeline—delivering food, medicine, fuel and farm produce,” he said. “Any closure would spell serious problems for public health and livelihoods.”

Uggah also mentioned that the state is exploring longer-term measures to reduce the settlement’s susceptibility to road disruptions, including building a permanent helipad and enhancing existing trails for porters and small aircraft. “Our objective is to ensure no one in Sarawak remains isolated,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Rural Electrification and Water Supply Department has been tasked with coordinating with JKR on backup power and water connections in the event heavy rains render the road impassable again. The deputy chief minister reiterated his appeal to the federal government to hasten its funding release so that full-scale road rehabilitation can proceed without further delay.
