A young Oriental Pied Hornbill was found dead on February 20 along a trail near the Sungai Niah area in Miri. Staff from the Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) recovered the carcass and have commenced a necropsy to determine the cause of its sudden demise.
No visible external wounds were noted when the hornbill was discovered, and early assessments indicate there were no signs of poaching or predator attack. “Until the necropsy report is complete, we cannot exclude disease, poisoning or other natural causes,” stated an SFC wildlife officer. The examination will include screening for avian viruses and toxic substances in the blood and organs.
Although the Oriental Pied Hornbill is classified as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, it is fully protected under Sarawak’s Wildlife Ordinance 1998. SFC officials underscored the need to monitor hornbill populations in the state’s lowland rainforests, where these birds are essential for seed dispersal and ecosystem balance.
Members of the public who hike or reside near protected forest reserves are urged to report any injured or deceased hornbills to the SFC hotline at 082-341 335. “Timely reporting lets us respond promptly, collect specimens and compile data crucial for conserving this iconic species,” the SFC statement added. The department expects to release the necropsy findings within two weeks.
